Review: What Zombies Fear By Kirk Allmond

What Zombies Fear: A Father's Quest

Title: What Zombies Fear: A Father's Quest

Author: Kirk Allmond

Published: September 8th 2011

Kindle Edition

Pages: 159

Goodreads Synopsis:

When Victor Tookes went to work that beautiful spring day he never expected to see a man eaten in the street in front of his office. After convincing himself that they really were zombies, he makes a trip from his house in Pennsylvania to his family home in Virginia, battling zombies all the way. His three and a half year old son was bitten on the leg, but doesn't turn into a zombie. Instead, he turns into something more than human.

Victor and his friends discover that not all zombies are created equal, some of them are smarter than others. Some of them are even able to pass for human.

My Review:

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I picked up What Zombies Fear as a free download from Amazon.

Victor Tookes (Tookes as he is called) woke up on a beautiful spring day and headed off to work. On his way there he dropped his three year old son Max off at day care. Upon his arrival at work he saw a man being eaten alive. At first he had no clue as to what was going on. Then he convinced himself that what he was thinking was true he was seeing zombies.

After he realized what was going on he knew he had to get his family and get out of there real quick. So he takes his wife and son and heads to his mother's farm in Virginia. He knew that they would be safer there than anywhere else. The farm was almost completely fenced in so that the zombies could not get to them easily.

On his way to the farm they were attacked by hordes of zombies. Some of the zombies were very strong and had special abilities. You couldn't even tell some of the zombies from humans. They could walk around and talk as if they were still alive but were not.

Tookes' son Max is bitten by a zombie but he doesn't turn into a zombie but afterwards he has very special abilities. The smart zombies know this and want Max. Tookes his family and his friends will all do what is necessary to keep Max safe and a way from the zombies.

I thought What Zombies Fear was one of the very best books on zombies that I have read thus far. I loved that the zombies were faster and smarter. Not all the zombies wanted to eat humans like in most zombie books. If you love reading books about zombies then you have to read this one. Trust me you will not regret picking it up. It was the bomb.

Goodreads synopsis:

It always starts small.

A single action, followed by another, and another... By the time most people realize the scrabbling noise in the dark is coming from something with teeth, it’s too late. In a small town in South Jersey, the darkness has taken root, spreading fast.

Only a few people have survived. The ones who are left, are Getting Out of Jersey.

Why did I choose Getting Out of Jersey for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday?

I love reading about zombies and have read some great reviews for Getting Out of Jersey. I like the cover with the bloody hand on it. The summary makes it sound very interesting.

The Road to Hell

Book Title: The Road to Hell: The Book of Lucifer

Author: Christopher C. Starr

Published: August 9th 2011

Publisher: Sanford House Press

Pages: 286

SYNOPSIS FROM THE ROAD TO HELL: THE BOOK OF LUCIFER

You already know my name and, yes, I am that Lucifer. Fall from Heaven, Garden of Eden, ruler of Hell, Satan, the Devil, the Adversary, blah blah blah. I am the one you condemned without, what do you call it? A fair trial. Forget what you think you know: I want to tell my side of the story. The Road to Hell is all about how a pathetic group of short-sighted angels kicked me out of Heaven.

Humans are naturally curious and I suspect you’re asking ‘why now?’ Well, He has a book and it’s been pretty successful, so I figured what the hell? Found a ghostwriter and gave it a go. After all, the story is fantastic! It has everything you clods of dirt crave: a love story, a little sex, intrigue. Murder. War. Lots of blood. And a cast of characters you already know and love—Michael, Gabriel, Raphael—along with a host of others. Even has a special guest appearance by the Father and that damned boy.

So, let’s get down to business or brass tacks or whatever colloquialism works for you. I have plenty to say and plenty of time: The Road to Hell is just the first in a series of novels about my experience with Him, with my brothers and sisters, with you. If you’re interested in featuring me, reach out to the pile of dust below; if not, well, I’ll see you soon.

EXCERPT FROM THE ROAD TO HELL: THE BOOK OF LUCIFER

Lucifer heard me: as soon as my feet touched the glass surface of his platform, he laughed aloud and doused all the light in Heaven.

.

“I know why you’re here, Raphael,” Lucifer said in the darkness. “You’re afraid.”

I was afraid but I wasn’t willing to admit it. Instead I said, “Why should I be afraid? The Father is with me.”

“You sure about that?” And I could see Lucifer’s teeth glinting in the light wafting from my body. He was smiling. “You think he’ll still back you up now that you’re failing him?”

His face was the color of fire, deep and red, and a haze made him seem like a mirage. Even in the darkness, in the heat of his rage, Lucifer was still beautiful. His thin face, the angular cheekbones, his wide, open eyes, his halo of shimmering hair—all presented a portrait of absolute perfection. Even in this dark hour, I envied the crude formation of my own round face, my pudgy nose, the softness of my jawline.

I tried to sound as sure of myself, as certain as he was but my voice cracked, “I’m not failing—”

He pounced on me, laid long, thin fingers on my shoulders, pushed that gleaming grin into my face. “Sure you are! Why else would you be here, Peace Keeper? Angels are dead, Raphael. It’s slipping through your fingers. Sounds like failure to me.”

“This is your doing!” I pressed him back.

“Raphael, you insult me; finger pointing seems so…beneath you. Besides, I’m bound, remember?” He fondled the chains streaming from his wrists and ankles, smiled at me again. “You chained me up so I couldn’t cause any problems for the others. Weren’t those your words?”

He was right. And I hated him for it. “Yes,” was all I said.

“So you failed them or you failed him. Either way, you’re a failure, kiddo.”

“I want to talk about what we do next.”

He was walking around me now. I could hear the chains scraping the surface of the glass.

“And I want to talk about your fears,” he said and his voice sounded like velvet in my ears.

“This doesn’t help us, Lucifer. It doesn’t help us end this nonsense. ”

“Maybe I don’t want to end it. Maybe this is exactly what we need.” He got louder, bolder. Closer. “Does that scare you, Raphael, that you won’t be able to keep it together? Is that why you tremble in the darkness? Because when it’s just you and the Father and all the light and noise is gone, you know you’re going to have to tell him you failed?”

He had me. I understood in that moment how Lucifer could enflame the deepest of emotions. His words touched the very root of me; spoke directly to the futility flexing in my palms. It was out of my hands—I knew that much. Lucifer knew it too. By virtue of the fact that I was there, standing before him while he taunted me, it was out of my hands.

I tried to turn it back on him, “What about your fears? What about what you’re afraid of?”

“I’m scared,” he whispered, “that the Father won’t want me back once I’m finished.” The smile was gone.

GUEST POST
MAKING HEAVEN UNHEAVENLY

Heaven’s not what you think. At least not in my book. And you’re either gonna love it or you’re gonna hate it.

I generally get questions about the world, about the version of Heaven, I built for The Road to Hell. It’s not a world of fluffy clouds and fat babies with harps. It’s not even a grass-covered meadow with wondrous waterfalls and hordes of wildflowers (well, not in the beginning), and there are absolutely, positively no diamonds or golden streets, rainbows or unicorns. My version of Heaven is kind of minimalist, kind of bleak. Kind of blah.

But there’s a reason for it.

This story is Lucifer’s story, it’s told from the very beginning and, as Lucifer says, he was first. There’s nothing in the beginning except him and Father (God) so there’s no reason for a Heaven. Lucifer simply is. It isn’t until he makes some poor choices that we have Heaven at all. His poor choices compound, building on one another and Heaven changes as a result: it grows, it is destroyed, it is remade and expanded. Heaven changes to meet the needs of the angels, whether that is positive or negative. It is a world created and manipulated by their choices.

You have to remember, when Lucifer fell, about a third of the angels fell with him. To me, this is significant. I have always been fascinated by the power of his argument: what can you say that will compel 30% of the population that you are right and God is wrong? How unpalatable can Heaven be that a third of its inhabitants are willing to stage a coup? There has to be something there, just beneath the surface. Heaven can’t be heavenly then, it can’t be this bosom of peace and bliss and worship; it has to be something more raw, more angst-ridden. More disconcerting. It has to be a place where doubt can live, where faith can be challenged, where rebellions can foment.

And it has to make sense.

That’s the other piece. Everything that happens in Heaven happens for a reason. So much so, the Father makes it a point to say, “Everything serves a purpose.” There is a reason behind everything, choices that propel both the story and Heaven forward and ultimately break it apart. Heaven fractures as the angels fracture. There are seven cities named for seven virtues: Truth, Wisdom, Peace, Hope, Faith, Righteousness and Light. These cities experience varying degrees of destruction as the angels destroy those virtues within themselves. Their world actually crumbles as their society crumbles. And It physically breaks apart when angels are cast out.

This is in sharp contrast to our own world. Earth is not shaped by choice; it is given to us as a promise. The Father forges this world then places humanity in it; He built Heaven around the angels and let them shape it.

You know, as an author, there are some magnificent moments where you realize something about your own story you never meant to write. I never saw Heaven itself as a character or even indicative of what was happening in it—it wasn’t until someone asked me about it, about why I made the choices I made, that I really realized its significance.

Thank you so much for having me! I really appreciate it!

Christopher C. Starr is the author of The Road to Hell: The Book of Lucifer, the first novel in the Heaven Falls series. Chris makes it a point to look at the dark side of his characters, both heroes and villains, and his work explores the “grey”—that place where good and evil come together in all of us.

When he’s not being chased out of churches, Chris enjoys comic books and movies, staying away from cemeteries, and poorly participating in P90X. This weeks Top Ten List

Top Ten Bookish Confessions (Anything! You dog ear, you hated a book but said you loved it, you have $500 library fines...anything goes!)

  1. I hate it when someone turns the corners down in a book.

  2. I won't criticize a book because that author has worked hard in writing that book and is very proud of their work. I won't lie but I will find a way to word it so that I am not saying anything bad about it.

  3. I don't like comparing one book to another book if it is in a negative way.

  4. I don't like comparing authors either saying that one author is better than the other. If I do compare them I am saying that that author is in the same league or writing style as the other author.

  5. I hate when I am reading and people start talking to me and expect me to know what they have just said to me like I am not doing anything.

  6. I also hate it when I am reading and someone starts playing music or turns the tv up real loud.

  7. Most of the time I will judge a book by its cover. Although I have been wrong before. Just because I think the cover does not look good doesn't mean that it is wrong for the book or that the story is not going to be a good story.

  8. It upsets me when people judge me because of the types or genre of books that I read. The genre of books that I read does not make me the person that I am.

  9. I don't like lending my books to people because most of the time they won't return them.

  10. I have had this dream for years to have a room with bookshelves that go from the floor to the ceiling on all four walls. I call it my "dream room".

Description:

FOR THREE DAYS, IT WAS DARK.

News reporters scrambled. This was the biggest story to come along in weeks.

They called it a blackout.

The last one was in New York City in 2003, but this one was different, special, because the grids in six major cities across the country had been fried, kaput, see-you-next-Sunday. Everyone with some jurisdiction blamed each other, and when there was no one left to blame, terrorism rode in on its gallant steed.

It was the media’s fault. They were so busy stuffing fanatical Muslims with a penchant for Allah and decapitations down the American citizen’s throat, that they never saw it coming. I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on them.

They were partially right.

It was terror after all, but a whole new kind. And when the lights came back on, things had changed.

The dark had brought us visitors.

My Review

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a copy of Revamp from the author for a review via Bewitching Book Tours.

Emma Spade who was a college student and had an interview in California. When she boarded the airplane there were only like 15 passengers. She thought this was very unusual but that was the case. On the flight she fell a sleep from exhaustion caused by the stress of college life. Meaning all of her classes and writing her thesis and turning it in on time.

When she wakes up the airplane has landed and everyone had exited the airplane. Emma was like why didn't the flight attendant or anyone else wake her up and tell her they had landed? She takes her luggage and walks inside the airport. Upon entering the airport and having a look around she is in shock because the airport is empty. There are no people in the airport just like on the airplane.

Emma is a very strong heroine. She doesn't whine when she is attacked. She will access her situation in order to figure out what she needs to do to get away. I think she handled being the only person in an airport the size of LAX very well. While reading Revamp with no one on the airplane nor in the airport it reminded me of a movie that I had watched as a child, called "Where have all the people gone?"

I loved how the author when writing about each character's back ground he would state it like Cooper Then and Cooper Now. He let each character tell their own story and he let you know if they were speaking about the past or the present. You had no doubt of the time that they were speaking of. I have read some books where you are like what? Which character is speaking now and like is this happening now or has it already happened? You have to go back and reread what you just read to figure out who is talking and when it is happening.

Over all I enjoyed, no wait I really, really loved reading Revamp. It was a fabulous read. I loved how the vampires wanted to rise and stand up for what they thought was theirs or what they deserved. I am not saying they were right or that they went about it in the right way just that they stood up for their selves.

I would definitely recommend Revamp to anyone who loves reading horror books. This includes teenagers under 18. Why? Well, when I started reading I did start with romance books. I was in the fifth grade, romance books was I all knew because that is what my grandmother and aunts read. But then a few years later I discovered horror books and fell in love. Reading horror books or watching horror movies never affected me. The bloodier, gorier they are the better I like it. Have I ever had dreams where someone was chasing me and trying to kill me? Yes. Did they scare me? No. When I woke up I wanted to go back to sleep and finish the dream.

Book Description:

"Enforcer Fontana Marks is on vacation undercover until she has to testify against the Track Cartel for crimes against the Galactic Coalition. But the cartel is hiding something, and Fontana intends to find out what--then make them pay for murdering Jenny, the young scientist Fontana failed to protect on a previous assignment.

The last thing Fontana intends to do while vacationing incognito on the fantasy resort Sagitariun is follow the advice of her superior. "Rest, recuperate, and find a man."

But how can a woman resist a blond, blue-eyed, chisel-jawed, great-assed man streaking naked in public when he's obviously running from someone? And why can't she to get rid of the damned trench coat she stole to rescue him?"

Excerpt:

The man shifted, and the loose-fitting white shirt went taut across his broad shoulders. Memory of his tanned skin and steel muscle hit like a thunderbolt, and Fontana’s stomach did a flip.

He grinned, a sure sign he knew he was being viewed through a one-way door. Desire rippled through her on a slow, sure wave that promised heart-stopping pleasure. She’d known good-looking men. Ray, her last serious relationship five years ago, had been gorgeous. She’d been mad for him, but the man standing outside her door had a quality about him that made her want to snuggle up against him and fall asleep.

Fontana snorted. Her body would disagree. Right now that part of her throbbed with an insistent desire to bed him—hard. Maybe then the flutter in her heart would have a say, and she’d fall asleep wrapped in his arms. That would be a welcome change to the sleepless nights she’d spent since Jenny’s death. It would be a temporary fix, but she could use at least one good night’s rest.

She sighed. First she’d better deal with the damned raincoat and find out how the naked man had escaped the shock troopers. Then there was the little matter of how he’d found out where she was staying.

Fontana rose and smoothed the form-fitting blouse and poly-cotton slacks she wore. “Open door,” she said, and the door dematerialized.

His stare slid down her body, and her nipples tightened to a delicious discomfort—and one he couldn’t miss under the millipore fabric of her top.

“Well, Mr. Long John.”

His blue eyes returned to her face. “Long John?”

She stepped aside and motioned him in. “Last time I saw you, your long johnson was standing at attention.”

He entered, and the door rematerialized behind him. “Give him a minute, and he’ll be at your command again.”

“What are you doing here?”

He wrapped an arm around her waist. “You said to look you up.”

She spun out of his grasp and backed up. “How did you find me?”

“Spacer Jack’s is brimming with information.”

He was right. She’d figured that out the first time she’d walked in. Even a benign resort like Club Sagitariun had a dark side. Proof stood right in front of her in all its masculine glory. No. All his masculine glory had been long, hard, and ready to go in the alley. Damn shock troopers. Ten more minutes and she would have had a quick hard ride on his steel rod.

He continued to advance.

She retreated. “Where’s my raincoat?”

He grasped her hand. “What do you need with a man’s raincoat?”

“The owner is looking for it.”

“Forget about him.” He stepped closer.

“Can’t.”

“I came to thank you for the coat. Let me buy you breakfast.”

Some offer—and not what she had in mind for jump-starting a morning that had begun four hours ago for her.

“It’s not my coat,” she said.

“We’ll find the owner and thank him—later. We have some unfinished business.”

Heat radiated from his body. Her pulse sped up. The smile at the corners of his mouth deepened. Her calves made contact with the bed. He stepped closer, grasped her hand, and pressed her palm over his heart.

Fontana ignored the warmth spreading through her and locked gazes with him. “What did those shock troopers want?”

He shrugged. “Never found out.”

“They never caught you.”

“I had to elude them so I could be here.”

That had a certain logic she liked.

His fingers gently tightened over the hand still pressed against his heart. “You’ve got my heart beating like crazy.”

She noted the hard muscle of his chest, under which only a regular heartbeat thumped, and pulled her hand away. “It’s not nice to lie.”

“I’m hurt.”

She wanted to laugh. He actually did look hurt.

“Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten all that we’ve shared,” he said.

Now she did laugh. Fontana was startled at the unexpected relief she felt. She hadn’t laughed since setting foot on Rigil IV. He cut off her thoughts by pulling her against him. His mouth crashed down onto hers. The hard ridge of his arousal dug into her stomach. She could almost believe she had a special effect on him. Almost. But that erection was just a little too ready—a little too eager—to belong to anyone but a working man.

Why did I choose Deadfall for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday?

A team of mercenaries is sent to rescue two children that has been kidnapped and they run into zombies. A kidnapping and zombies mixed sounds like a very great read. I love reading about zombies and watching movies about zombies. I read Shaun Jeffrey's book Dead World and wanted to read another book by him. Read my review of Dead World.

The Sword and The Prophet (#1)

Title:The Sword and The Prophet

The Sword and The Prophet is one of those books that is going to stick with me for years to come. One that I can't seem to get out of my head. You know its like when you get a song in your head and keep hearing it over and over and over. That is how this book has been for me. Instead of a song stuck in my head there's a book stuck in my head.

Of Poseidon (Of Poseidon, #1)

Title:Of Poseidon

Author: Anna Banks

When I read the ending I was like "no, no, no you can't do this". I was very shocked at how it ended but I did love it. I mean its like your sitting on the edge of your seat and you can't put it down because you just got to know what is coming next. What is Anna Banks going to slam us in the face with next? And then when you least expect it bam "the end". I thought about that ending for days and days. Who am I kidding I am stilling thinking about it. I guess I will for along time to come.

Dead World

Title:Dead World

Author: Shaun Jeffrey

I loved the whole concept, idea that is being portrayed in Dead World. It is not just about zombies or Gods in general. I love the aspect of telling a story with in a story. Shaun Jeffrey has an amazing, awesome way of telling a story. He is a brilliant story teller. To understand what he is trying to say you would have to have an open mind. Blog A Quote #14

Blog A Quote is weekly meme hosted by Michelle Chew Writes. Each week we will be sharing a quote from our favorite books. For more info and to sign up visit Michelle Chew Writes.

My quote for this week is from Wolves of the Calla The Dark Tower, #5 By Stephen King

Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower, #5)

“She put a hand on his hip and turned him to her. "But things could go wrong, so I want to tell you something while it's just the two of us, Eddie. I want to tell you how much I love you." She spoke simply, with no drama.

I know you do," he said, "but I'll be damned if I know why."

Because you made me feel whole," she said. "When I was younger, I used to vacillate between thinking love was this great and glorious mystery and thinking it was just something a bunch of Hollywood move producers made up to sell more tickets in the Depression, when Dish Night kind of played out."

Eddie laughed.

Now I think that all of us are born with a hole in our hearts, and we go around looking for the person who can fill it. You...Eddie, you fill me up.”

I liked this quote because I think it is so cool what she is telling Eddie. She thinks that we all walk around with holes in our hearts looking for the one person that can fill that hole.
