"Out
of the protagonists you’ve written about so far, which one do you feel you
relate to the most?"
The
protagonist nearest and dearest to my heart would be Jessa, the main character
from TRAVELER and DREAMER. Though in all fairness, Jessa is much braver than
I’ve ever was at her age. She’s just as introverted as me – and like me, it’s often
to her detriment. She’s built this big, insular bubble of her writing around
her because it’s her escape from this often monotonous and frequently
exasperating life she thinks she leads. I imagine her like Belle, standing on a
hillside; arms flung wide, longing for adventure in the great, wide somewhere.
I grew up in
a small town in the desert southwest, and many of my friends had family who had
lived there for generations. My father was a military man. He’d traveled the
world and even been through a war, so he was happy to settle down and dig some
roots. And while my hometown – like much of New Mexico - is steeped in natural
beauty, I couldn’t wait to get out of there and really start living my life. I
had a big calendar on my bedroom wall and I would cross off every day with a
bright red marker until I left for college. It broke my mother’s heart, I’m
sure, but that small town life wasn’t my destiny.
Jessa feels
like she’s stuck in a perpetual holding pattern until she can graduate and
finally live life on her own terms, but everything gets tossed in the air when
those life terms are altered drastically. It makes her question all the forces
that have come to bear on her life, and the very definition of reality. Worst
of all, she questions herself. In DREAMER, we see Jessa take the lessons she
was taught in TRAVELER and apply them. She really comes into her own and learns
to trust herself – or rather, her selves,
and that ends up being the key to everything.
Jessa is the
girl I wish I could go back in time and be. She’s the sarcastic adventuring
soul who still values the people that ground her.

Her work has been featured on various online outlets and she lives in Pennsylvania with two very adventurous kids and two very ridiculous cats. In her spare time, she writes (of course) and binge-watches way too much Netflix.
